KUSP Background

KUSP Background Info:

  • The Kenya Urban Support Program is a World Bank funded project with the objective of establishing and strengthening urban institutions to deliver improved infrastructure and services. Uasin Gishu County and Eldoret Municipality in particular is one of the 45 participating counties in Kenya. The Bank has observed that in Kenya, economic growth has been accompanied by rapid urbanization and yet Kenya remains under-urbanized. This means Kenya can still leverage the benefits of urbanization for improving economic opportunities and living conditions.

  • The Government of Kenya has recognized the need to manage urbanization as part of its overall development strategy as articulated in various documents. Kenya Vision 2030, for example, highlights rapid urbanization as one of four key challenges facing the country and within its over-arching framework, Vision 2030 notes that the urbanization component of the Second Medium Term Plan aim to facilitate a sustainable urbanization process through an integrated urban and regional planning management framework of Kenyan urban centers and towns.

  • The Municipality of Eldoret, therefore, is benefitting from the project in line with the MTP goals which identify series of investment programs to enhance infrastructure, connectivity and accessibility, safety and security.
